Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the ability to contest certain decisions from the official, echoing the practice already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move comes just a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
